Scripture

Ecclesiastes 7:10,13-14 (NIV)

10 Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?”
For it is not wise to ask such questions.

13 Consider what God has done:
Who can straighten
what he has made crooked?

14 When times are good, be happy;
but when times are bad, consider this:
God has made the one
as well as the other.
Therefore, no one can discover
anything about their future.

Observation

There is only one way to God, in Heaven. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6 NIV). However, there are many paths that people take in their journey to knowing Him. No two people can walk the same path. God made every one of us a unique being with a mission in life that only we can do. You are a new thing. While Ecclesiastes often laments that there are “no new things under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9), I believe that this has more to do with the notion that everything seems to follow the same patterns in life. Everyone is born and everyone dies. In between people do things that are righteous and people do things that are not righteous.

When we look to the “good old days” and long for them again we are thinking that we know, in the present, what is better for us than what God has for us. It’s easy to look back on pleasant times and believe that they were better. Often, we rarely remember events as they were. We are likely to remember very negative events or very positive events while forgetting all of the smaller positive and negative moments of those days. I am reminded of a time when I was skiing in Banff, Canada. I wrote about it here 30 years later. So many years and I still remember the day. It was the first time I ever saw a rainbow touch the ground. I can still see it right now. However, I know that during that same time I was going through a lot in my life that I wouldn’t want to go through again.

When I’m going somewhere I usually want to get there right away, unless I’ve purposely planned to take a long winding trip. Otherwise, please give me a straight path to my destination. When I first became a Christian my life looked like a mess. The first Bible verses that I grabbed onto and chanted like a mantra to myself were Proverbs 3:5-6; “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (NIV). Holding onto these verses, God got me through those times. When I stop and consider what God has done in my life. The twists and turns that I have traveled with Jesus by my side. I can only weep with thanksgiving.

If you’ve ever walked or driven up a mountainside then you know that the road on that mountain twists and turns to minimize the effort on the vehicle or body traveling to the top. You can try and drive straight up, if there’s a way, or even try walking straight up the mountain. However, the vehicle will start to slide to the right or the left and you will crash. If you’re on foot then you will tire out far more quickly and you’re more likely to fall. Traveling on mountain roads is dangerous. Just check out all of these tips to help you on a mountainous drive. There are 15 different points for consideration! Every point can be linked and measured with how we are to travel in our lives to the mountain of God. And now, I’m going to do that with each point… Another time, perhaps.

We know that on the righteous path that God has for us that He doesn’t want us to turn away to the left or the right from Him. If God, therefore, has given us the best path for our lives, full of twists and turns, but always going straight to Him, why would we want to try and make it straight?

God gives us good times and He allows us to go through bad times. If we accept the good from Him and rejoice then why do we weep and wail so much over the bad times? If we know that God works out all things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28 NIV) then we should rejoice in all times. Right? The key to this and every issue we face is our perspective. I know I’ve said it before but it needs to be said again until we get it. When we have the eternal perspective of God then we can endure all things through Christ Jesus who gives us strength (Philippians 4:13). When we realize that our pain and turmoil today, is momentary in the scheme of everything that God is doing in and through us then we can take joy, and rejoice, in what we know He is doing. This is faith. This is bearing our cross each day. This is walking in Jesus’ footsteps, the One who has walked before us and is carrying us into the wonderful light of God.

Would you like to be saved from the fear of death? Knowing that when you die you will be in an eternity filled with love, joy, and peace where there is no longer pain and suffering? Would you like to walk free of guilt today? To have your sins forgiven by the grace of God and to know true peace, here and now?

Pray this prayer with me to accept the gift of salvation today:

Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

Scripture

Ephesians 2:3

All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath (NIV).

Observation

Sometimes I think it’s easy to sit in the church amongst other Christians and look down on the world. We shake our heads, look to the heavens and lament wicked ways and say, “The people of today.” We thank God that we aren’t like them. We believe that the world is getting worse. Are the sins of the world greater now than when we walked around in it sinning? Do we have eyes that see, now? That see the sin since we are saved? Do we? Or are we that Pharisee who prays “‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people-robbers, evildoers, adulterers-or even like this tax collector'” (Luke 18:11 NIV)? Or are we more like Jesus’ disciples who saw the blind man and asked, “‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?'” (John 9:1 NIV) We know “’It was not because of his sins or his parent’s sins,’” (John 9:3 NLT) that the man was born blind. He had been born blind “‘so the power of God could be seen in him'” (John 9:3 NLT).

When our eyes are focused on sin then they aren’t focused on God. We need to stop looking at the sins of the world and start looking at the world with love. The state of sin in the world is no different today than it was thousands of years ago. Paul wrote in Romans 1:30, “they invent ways of doing evil.” Does that sound like the world today? The Psalmist writes:

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good. The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one (Psalm 14:1-3 NIV).

Let’s face facts. The world is going to continue “eating and drinking, [and] marrying” (Matthew 28:38 NIV) until it is no more. Jesus tells us, “‘whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father'” (John 14:12-14 NIV). What are “these” that Jesus is referring to? “The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor [in spirit]” (Matthew 11:5 NIV). If Jesus said that this is what we would do then we can do it. We can’t do it though, with eyes that see sin. We need to change our perspective.

The only hope we have of changing our perspective and seeing the world with love is to ask God to change our hearts. We need to see with an eternal perspective. We need to repent for seeing people as vessels of sin and see them as our family. It doesn’t matter if they are a Christian or not. Jesus Christ died for all of us. They are the prodigal son, the prodigal daughter, you and me. We are all the same. We are all children of God.

Do you know God? He loves you, and He wants you to know Him. He already knows you and He would rather die than not have you in His family. Jesus died for your sins and mine so that we could be free of guilt, be freed from death, and live eternally with Him.

Amen.

Scripture

Ephesians 1:4-6

4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. (NIV)

Observation

Do you remember when you first gave your life to Jesus? It was like God had given you a new pair of shoes for your soul. There was nothing that you couldn’t do if God said to do it. You walked and talked differently. You had a purpose. The sun shone, every day, with promise when you were born again. You were on the mountain with God and you never wanted to come down.

You were on fire for the Lord and nothing could put it out. Trials and tribulations came and went with barely any scars. More time passed, as it does, and things started to change. As the blessings of God flowed into your life you became busier and busier. Those Spirit-filled highs of being with God seem to be fewer and fewer. You were doing everything “right.” Going to church, reading your Bible every day, serving in ministry, and smiling. Oh, how you smiled back then. You were blessed and you knew it. What was there to not smile about? God was with you and everything was fine.

Weights of life,
weary to the soul,
cling, like briars,
prick, like thorns.
Bloodstained garments,
remind us-
we are too human.
Broken bodies,
fallen friends,
litter memories-
singing,
joy to the Lord.
Of raised hands, in fellowship,
days long passed,
every shielded smile,
wounds beneath,
festering.
Fractured dreams, on the altar of love,
give life to seeds of doubt,
willowy whispers,
God is near? God is near?

And you wonder, will I ever be holy again? Will I walk again along righteous paths in green pastures, His gentle arms around me, holding me? God of love. God of mercy. God of grace. Father? Do you hear me? And you remember. “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11 NIV). “No word from God will ever fail” (Luke 1:37 NIV). Nothing can snatch me from His hand (John 10:28). And the Word is opened to you, you who believe. You have eternal life and “I am with you, always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Revelation 22:13). “He who believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 KJV). I am His. “He is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8 NIV). The righteous will fall but God picks them back up (Proverbs 24:16).

And you breathe. Mountain air, so sweet, coming to you in the valley, this shadow of death, we all walk through it, the mountains are illusions, high points in this valley. We are high because He lifts us. We are holy because He is holy. We are His because He chose us before creation…

Do you know God? He loves you. He’s not mad at you and He wants you to know Him. He already knows you and He would rather die than not have you in His family. Jesus died for your sins and mine so that we could be free of guilt, be freed from death, and live eternally with Him.

Scripture

Proverbs 13:19 (NIV)
A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul,
but fools detest turning from evil.

Proverbs 14:12 (NIV)
There is a way that appears to be right,
but in the end it leads to death.

Observation

Have you ever peeked at a present before it was time to open it or had someone ruin a surprise? What about that movie you wanted to see or that book you were reading and somehow the ending was spoiled? You might think I’m crazy, but when I’m at the theater and the previews come on I close my eyes and put my hands over my ears. I want to be able to fully enjoy a film or book. It’s all about the journey. You’d think that with this attitude that it would be easy to wait on God. Right?

I “know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28 NIV), so why do I fret when I see the sign, “Slow Rough Road Ahead” in my life? It says it right there on the sign, “Slow.” When I’m driving my car, I slow down. I don’t want to have an accident. How much more, should I slow down in my life? When God “makes me lie down in green pastures” (Psalm 23:2 NIV) why don’t I slow down and allow Him to “lead me beside quiet waters” (Psalm 23:2 NIV)? I know the scriptures! I know that I plan my way and you God, you order my steps (Proverbs 16:9). Why am I like this? Why do I fuss and whine and want it now?! Don’t you know, Father, it says it right here in your word, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life” (Proverbs 13:12 NIV)! I have hoped and hoped and hoped for so many years…

Then He tells me, “I delight in your journey.”
