2 Kings 15:18 (NIV)

Do you think the work that you do in your life is important? What’s the lens you’re using when you think about that? When we look around, we can see all sorts of jobs that people consider important. Each of us, I imagine, when we were children, had an idea of what we “wanted to be” when we grew up. Sometimes, as adults, we might look back on those childhood wishes and scoff. I wanted to fly or work in Intelligence when I was a kid, so I joined the United States Airforce after high school. What did you want to do?

Scripture

Isaiah 31:1 (NIV)

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the Lord.

Observation

I saw an interesting post today on Reddit. Someone asked the group whether or not they were making a good choice by getting a job now even though it paid less than unemployment. This isn’t a group that I follow so I don’t know the dynamic of the group. However, what stuck out to me was the unwavering idea, from everyone who had replied, that there was “security” in a job. My opinion is that if you can get a job then that’s great. God didn’t gift us with the skills that we have to do nothing with them. If we can work then we ought to (2 Thessalonians 3:10).

However, what strikes me as odd, on one hand, is that after so many people lost their jobs in the last year due to the pandemic, that people would still trust in and believe in the “security” of a job. Are we so quick to forget, even when so many remain jobless? As a Christian, I know that the only security that is real is that which comes from God. If we think that we are secure in anything other than God we are fooling ourselves. On the other hand, I know that the world sees things differently. However, aren’t we all, when we’ve touched that hot stove, a little reticent in touching it again with such fervent and blind faith?

I lost my job and it shook me up. I worked hard at what I did and did the best that I could. I was good at that job. I saw that God blessed people through me and it made me happy. All day, every day, as I went through the day, I praised the Lord for what He was doing. However, as I have prayed, listened, and been still before the Lord, I have to be honest and say that I don’t want to do that work anymore. For so many years, instead of following my passion and doing the things that get my heart pumping, I’ve worked my “backup” skills.

The Lord has shown me that He’s given the skills to me that I have. Just as He has given you the skills that you have. However, I’m not to rely on those skills to guide my path. I need to rely upon Him. To some, this may sound odd because one might think that if God gave us our skills then shouldn’t we use them? Yes, absolutely. However, there are many ways to use the skills that God has given to us. Just like sex, drugs, music, food and so many other things, our skills have an intended use. Therefore, we need to rely upon God to show us how to use them.

As I move forward, I’m trying to be more discerning as I go, as I believe, the way that God is leading me. He’s pointing to me roads that I thought were closed, long ago, and quite frankly, they look scary, but I know, that God is with me and if God is for me, who can be against me?

Do you know God? God knows you and He loves you. He sees you as significant because you are. Nothing is insignificant to Him. He’s with you today, right now, and He wants you to know Him. Jesus died for your sins and mine so that we could be free of guilt, be freed from death, and live eternally with Him. Eternal salvation is just a prayer away.

Pray this prayer with me to accept the gift of salvation today:

Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

If you prayed that prayer then congratulations! You are on the first step of a brand new life. Allow me to be the first to welcome you to my family, the family of God. Peace,
peace, peace
of mind.
What is peace?
Comfort, of
routine, daily-
your prison,
it was-
now, longing
fills your heart.
Highways and
byways, bumper
to bumper,
daydreams-
ebony terrors,
empty lines,
waiting…
Missing-
normal.

Watching the rain
through the window,
blowing in the silent
wind, the sun
bathing droplets,
remind me,
I’m behind
the glass,
stuck, like
a bug,
inside this
jar, of
nine
to
five.
