It’s no secret that the things we say matter. Although I grew up hearing that “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” it’s not true. The book of James has some powerful things to say about controlling our tongues and presents this truth; “no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8 NIV).

We can try and watch what we say and when we say it, but it’s impossible for us on our own. Jesus had this to say about impossible things.

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Matthew 19:26 (NIV)

Jesus might have been talking about the rich getting into Heaven, but we know that nothing is impossible for God.

The book of Proverbs has this to say about the tongue.

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)

When I think about taming the tongue, I’m reminded of this verse from the Psalms.

A song of ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.

Psalm 127:1 (NIV)

We can do everything in our power to watch what we say, but it’s futile unless we ask the Lord to help us do it.

Do you know God? God knows you, and he loves you. He sees you as significant because you are. No one is insignificant to Him. He’s with you today, and he wants you to know him. Jesus died for your sins and mine so we could be free of guilt, freed from death, and live eternally with him. Eternal salvation is just a prayer away.

Pray this prayer with me to accept the gift of salvation:

Lord Jesus, forgive me for all my sins. I repent from my ways. Wash me in your blood and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. I believe that you died on the cross, were buried, and on the third day, God the Father raised you from the dead. Right now, Lord Jesus, I open the door to my heart and receive you into my heart as my Lord and personal Savior. Amen.

If you prayed that prayer, then congratulations! You are on the first step of a brand new life. Allow me to be the first to welcome you to my family, the family of God.
